Using 4×4 rooftop tent jeep is such a beautiful way to explore and enjoy your safari in Uganda. All parts in Uganda are reachable using a 4×4 rooftop tent car irrespective of the terrain. You are at liberty to go any part of Uganda using the 4×4 rooftop tent jeep. Be it Uganda’s national parks, reserves or sanctuaries. You have the opportunity to take any route you wish to as long as you have your rooftop tent jeep.

You can decide to start with the western region which hosts national parks like Lake Mburo National Park, Bwindi Forest National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kibale Forest National Park, Semliki national park then head to the north west where you will find Murchison falls national park, take off to the north for Kidepo Valley National Park, go through the east where you will find Pian Upe game reserve, mountain Elgon then go to Jinja for the source of river Nile and many more activities there.

Driving starts from Entebbe airport where you receive the 4×4 rooftop tent jeep marking the beginning of your safari in Uganda. Here you sign the rooftop tent jeep agreement allowed to check the jeep fully and the take charge for the time you have paid for it. Drive to your preferred lodge to rest and dinner as well as overnight until the next drive to your first adventure venue.

Self drive Africa

Early morning after breakfast, start your drive at your own pace taking Nakasongola road via Bombo with first destination being Ziwa rhinos’ sanctuary where you will have lunch and then take a game drive to witness the rhinos. This adventure will give you the opportunity to watch these endangered, magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. All the rhinos at Ziwa are free to move around the 27 square miles within the ranch.

While at the ranch, you may also encounter a range of other wildlife, including Uganda kobs, oribi, bush bucks or water bucks. And of course, you may see many of the 300+ bird species that thrive here at Ziwa.

It is a beautiful experience to have your first night in the rooftop tent here at the camp site in the sanctuary. This will give you that excellent scenery of the sanctuary and if you are interested in birds, you get a great morning on the canoe at Lugogo swamp where you will see different types of birds including the shoe bill. This adventure is one for the early birds. You’ll set off on the shoe bill trek at 6am. The canoe ride through the swamp at this time gives you the best opportunity to see the shoe bill. But not only that, it is a fantastic way to see the beautiful Ugandan sunrise over the Lugogo Swamp.

It is now the right time to leave continuing to Murchison falls national park as you enjoy the countryside scenery. The moment you reach the park, you will take a hike to the top of the falls which is such a beautiful experience you can never forget. After the hike, transfer to the camping area and prepare a meal as you warm up to have another great night in the rooftop tent. It is here that you will fully understand the beauty of sleeping in a rooftop tent maximizing the flexibility, comfortability, safety as well as the uniqueness in the bush. No wild animal can attack you in this kind of setting making it admirable and very safe.

Take an early breakfast and cross to the other side of the north for a game drive where will be able to see as many animals as you can like elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, kobs antelopes and many more.

Take a Boat Cruise at the bottom of the falls. The cruise lasts about 3 hours starting and ending at the bottom of the falls. The top of the falls offers a breathtaking view of the waterfall and the loud roars coming from the water rushing down to the river. There is great opportunity to see the water birds include bee-eaters, cormorants, ducks, fish eagles, herons, kingfishers and shoe bill Storks.

A boat ride to the Nile Delta involves going further upstream beyond the point where the boats used for the normal cruise make a turn. This activity requires sparing half a day and is a must for birders. You can take a boat downstream on the Nile until the point where it enters Lake Albert. Return to your camp site and prepare a meal as you relax and rest.

Take a continuation to the north and the final destination will be Kidepo Valley National Park. On arrival, you will head direct to the camping area to relax from that long distance. This is one of Africa’s best parks with the most beautiful landscape.

Early in the morning after breakfast, go for a game drive along the Narus Valley since much of the year the park’s wildlife gather here. This area is well designed with track circuits and from a 4×4 tour car you have clear views of herbivores grazing in the short savanna plains. Lions and other cats are often sighted on top of rocks and Kopjes looking out for prey in the vast plains. You will enjoy seeing a great number of animals the majority being the buffaloes.

Continue to the Kidepo Valley where you can enjoy the sand bed river especially in the dry seasons. The sand bed is like an oasis in a desert. It is lined with palms trees and has plenty of birds. It is advisable to visit the northern area in the morning as the afternoon is unbearably hot and comes with more tsetse flies.

Crossing the sand bed river is another highlight to the Kanangorok Hot Springs where you enjoy the spectacular landscape and can also picnic near the springs which the local people believe have magic powers.

Go for a trek on Morungole Mountain an attractive activity which leads to the IK people. The great Morungole expedition involves a day’s hike through varying vegetation and rocky terrain with spectacular views of Kidepo Valley National Park exposing you to variety of dances from the IK, their way of life, their unique settlements and you get to learn their unique migration history.

It is the right time to cross to the north east where you will visit Pian Upe game reserve. The reserve rewards you with astonishing views over diverse wildlife species like zebras, buffaloes, leopards, lions, giraffes, greater Kudus, Topis, Oribis, Harte beests, dik-dik, roan antelopes, jackals, aardvark, cheetahs, spotted hyenas, elands, hedgehogs, birds such as Ostriches, Jackson’s horn bills, white headed buffalo weaver, hartlaub’s bustard as well as primates like olive baboons, patas monkeys, vervet monkeys and others.

In this reserve, you can never miss out on the reptiles including rock pythons, puff adders, water snakes. Bird lovers can never go wrong in this reserve with approximately 242 bird species. You can also take on hiking adventures which provide amazing sightseeing experiences especially at Napedet Cave. The cave is a famous ancient recreational site for the first occupants of this area. While on guided walks/hiking tour at Napedet Cave, it is possible to see incredible paintings of baboons, giraffes, hartebeest, roan antelopes.

You will continue to Jinja where you will take a rest from the long drives in different parks and reserves. This will give you the opportunity to visit the source of the Nile as well as other activities. Camping here in your rooftop tent will be the best experience ever. You will enjoy the morning and the evening breeze your rooftop tent with great views of the Nile and Lake Victoria at large.

As you drive to Entebbe airport, you will have a stop over in Mabira forest where you will take a walk in to discover the different types of trees as well as the birds in it. If interested, go for ziplining arranged in two sessions – Morning and afternoon. The morning session starts at 8am ending at mid-day while the afternoon session is from 1pm going up to 6pm. Accessing the forest canopy allows you to see many of the forest creatures including birds, monkeys and squirrels.

After the Mabira expedition, continue to Entebbe airport where you will meet with our driver to pick the rooftop tent jeep as you get in to take your flight back home.
